In Sandiara, next to the Site A solar cold store, a small building was fitted with a refrigerator during its trial phase. It was 45 °C outside. Secondary school students on their way home came in to ask for a cold drink. They were the first customers of the KIOSK, before it had even opened.
The KIOSK is a solar-powered building with electricity and an internet connection. It is designed for a village or a market that has neither. TUMIQUI JAPON SASU runs one at Site A in Sandiara and offers it to local authorities, cooperatives and markets.
What it is used for
| Service | Use |
|---|---|
| Charging | Charging of residents’ phones and lamps |
| Printing | Printing and photocopying of documents: administrative papers, homework, school or health post documents |
| Information | Local information on a screen: town hall notices, market prices, health messages |
| Small retail | Sale of cold drinks and basic goods, using the cold storage next door |
Every service runs on solar power. The KIOSK shares the electricity produced by the site’s panels and batteries. No grid connection and no generator.
Why a KIOSK next to a cold room
A cold store that only provides cold empties out at the end of the harvest. It becomes a closed box when the project ends. TUMIQUI JAPON SASU built the KIOSK so that the site is used every day, by everyone, and not only by growers in the mango season.
The KIOSK also gives a use to the electricity produced during the day. The Site A panels produce more than the cold room consumes. The surplus runs the printer, the screen and the drinks refrigerator.
The Site A KIOSK also serves as a collection point in the trial of the X-ICS local network system, carried out in Senegal with Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
