In Senegal, about 50,000 tonnes of mangoes are lost every year. The fruit ripens all at once, from May to August, and there is no cold room near the orchards. Without electricity there is no cold. Without cold, the harvest rots under the tree.
TUMIQUI JAPON SASU operates two solar-powered cold storage sites in Sandiara. The cold storage containers running there can be bought. Cold space at the two sites can also be rented. Both sites run day and night, with no grid connection and no generator.
The containers, to buy
The price depends on the configuration and is quoted on request. TUMIQUI JAPON SASU installs and maintains the containers in Senegal.

Cold space, to rent
Producers, cooperatives, processors and traders can rent cold space at both sites.
The two sites
| Site A | Site B | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Sandiara, Thiès region | Sandiara, Thiès region |
| Solar | 21 kWp | 35 kWp |
| Cold volume | 22 m³ | 60 m³ |
| Power supply | Solar and batteries only | Solar and batteries only |
| Operation | 24 hours a day | 24 hours a day |
| Use | Chilled storage, information point (KIOSK) | Chilled and frozen storage, processing |
Site A keeps 22 m³ cold with about 15 kWh a day. This comes from reinforced insulation and an inverter refrigeration unit. Outside air exceeds 40 °C on some days. Commissioned in 2026, the site has held its temperature around the clock on solar panels and batteries only.
Site B is equipped for chilling, freezing and processing. It hosts the mango processing carried out with the women’s group GIE DIAMI SANDIARA.

Why solar
A generator burns fuel every day and stops when the fuel runs out. The grid does not reach most production areas. TUMIQUI JAPON SASU therefore chose to produce electricity on site, with panels and batteries, and to cut the power needed for cooling so that this electricity is enough. The two Sandiara sites show that this works in Senegal, under real conditions.
