In a health post with no electricity, a night delivery is done by torchlight. The midwife holds the torch between her teeth while she works. That is what TUMIQUI JAPON SASU found in 2019, at the first health post it equipped in Senegal.
The TUMIQUI Smart Kit is a portable solar power unit. It gives a school, a health post or a workshop electricity that can be used on the day it is delivered. The panel is connected to the unit with a cable and switched on. No installation work and no electrician are required.

At the first school equipped in Senegal, the pass rate for the primary school leaving certificate was reported to have risen from 31% to 77% the following year. Power and video teaching materials are part of the conditions that support teachers’ work in class. In health posts, the kit is used for night consultations and deliveries. In the health posts the group has electrified, more than 600 deliveries have taken place with electricity. A health post manager said: “We can work at night now.”
What is connected to it
The Smart Kit supplies the electricity. What changes daily life is the equipment connected to it. Since 2019, TUMIQUI JAPON SASU has checked, site by site, what each piece of equipment brings.

TUMIQUI JAPON SASU proposes the combination of equipment according to the use. The pairing of the Smart Kit with a Seiko Epson printer is being tested in three health posts in Casamance, with the support of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). These three posts were equipped in 2026 under the JICA Biz programme.
Why it is chosen
Anyone can use it. Connect and switch on. A teacher at an equipped school said: “You just put the USB stick in the television. Even I can do it, and I am not good with machines.”
It lasts. The kit has been in service for more than five years in the heat, humidity and dust of Senegal and The Gambia. The battery was raised from 580 Wh to 864 Wh at the request of users who wanted more hours at night.
It is repaired in Senegal. Much equipment from abroad stops working at the first breakdown. TUMIQUI JAPON SASU was created to avoid this. Its technicians are based in Senegal. They install the kits, train the users and respond to breakdowns. Spare parts are managed from Senegal, not from Japan.
